After a tumultuous decade, manufacturers are again helping drive Michigan’s economy, rather than dragging it into the abyss as the sector did during the recession. Michigan gained more than 20,000 industrial jobs since early 2011, and the state is now home to more than 14,000 manufacturers employing approximately 650,000 workers. State policy makers, too, seem to be paying attention to help the state’s industrial base. The elimination of the Michigan Business Tax was a start, followed by eliminating the state’s industrial personal property tax, reducing unemployment and workers compensation costs and the elimination of hundreds of unnecessary regulatory rules. The year was capped off with the passage of legislation that made Michigan the newest (the 24th) Right to Work State. In Chuck Hadden’s words “. . . 2012 truly was a remarkable year.”
Please join us for this unique opportunity to hear how the Michigan manufacturing sector, lead by the MMA’s government affairs staff, worked with the state legislators and leadership in creating a pro-manufacturing climate. Their challenges are the same as we have here in Rhode Island. Through a collaborative commitment and shared vision, their legislative achievements are reinventing their state from the top down.
